THREE

Three generations ago, the Swiss colonised Indonesia, not only the country but also its women. This piece addresses the fate of Stefanie Inhelder's great-grandmother and, thus, an aspect of Swiss colonial history. Using movement and navigating between contemporary dance, holograms and musical composition, our team explored the questions left to us by our ancestors.

THREE is an immersive performance set within a cylinder of moving holographic images. It explores the theme of colonized female bodies. The projections illuminate this discourse, connecting past and future through abstract visuals. The scenography forms a meeting point between performers and digital space, evolving in real-time to create a trompe-l'œil effect that merges the physical and the virtual.

The projections, generated live, respond dynamically to virtual elements such as liquid and smoke movements, the rhythm of the soundscape, and the dancers' motion via motion capture. This interplay allows choreography to weave seamlessly with light, shadow, fog, and water, enhancing the immersive experience.

The technical setup includes two PCs—one handling mapping, the other generating visuals—along with a motion capture system that tracks the dancers' positions and speeds. Two strategically placed projectors cast holographic illusions inside and outside the cylinder. As the performers move through this fragile, ephemeral space, they challenge the projected light, embodying the tension between reality and illusion.
