NOTIFICATIONS

Hidden behind the aspect of tiny vibrations and audible alarms, notifications control us! On one side, notifications make us feel the urge to keep receiving immediate gratification, and on the other side, we are incessantly being interrupted by their call for attention. This essay, which is my bachelor thesis at ECAL, investigates the mechanism of notification, especially the one related to smartphones.

On the 2 of November 2016, I started collecting all kinds of notifications and pop-up messages I was receiving on my Android phone. I stopped this collection on the 3 of February 2017. During this period I developed a website where 26'017 notifications were collected. Notifications History, which is an Android application, allowed me to save an XML file and then create a database of the notifications I was receiving every day.
